CURATED SHOWCASE AT 100% DESIGN SOUTH AFRICA 2015

6 – 10 August 2015  /  Gallagher Convention Centre, Johannesburg

VISI editor-in-chief Sumien Brink and deputy editor Annemarie Meintjes picked two favourite stands at 100 % Design South Africa 2015.

This annual event, which runs alongside Decorex, showcases high-end design featuring both local and international furniture, fabrics and accessories. Two stands caught our eye.

The first is 100 Beautiful Things, an exhibition of 100 top designs made in South Africa during 2015 (VISI selected 10 of them). The second is 100% Colour, in association with Plascon, which used bright colours as the main feature. Both stands were curated by Cathy O’Clery, creative director at Platform Creative Agency.

JUNE 2015

MAKERS AT PLAY / THIS / THAT / STUFF

THE MOS SOFA PROJECT

Through this whole design process we came across some really inspiring stuff, some beautiful & epic & inspiring stuff. And designers - some really wow minds are out there doing what it is they do.

What we did discover through all our research is that there is a lot of referencing back to earlier designs. Little design leads but they are there. It's not a bad thing but it does mean that we're not changing seating on an intrinsic level. Seating, is after all, seating. Humans like comfort and we like to do it with the option of lying down.

Here are some links to the stuff:

THE DESIGNERS:

VLADIMIR KAGAN's The floating yellow sofa (on transparent legs) with the intricate fabric stitching detail is currently Antonia's all time favourite piece. Circa 1960s.

Olivia loves GEORGE NELSON's work. Well, some of his designs. This one that he did for Herman Miller (though not that iconic circle one). Circa 1960's.

PHILIPPE NIGRO has done some beautiful work. We really love the interesting quirks he has added to his work.

The BOUROULLEC brothers (Ronan & Erwan) have designed some truly amazing pieces for some of the biggest brand names. Their studio is progressive & the work shows it.

PATRICIA AURQUIOLA between architecture & product design this woman is making some beautiful things. So much playful interesting things. The scope of her design world must be huge.

Holy mother of awesome. We don't know much about fabric but these guys [ KVADRAT  ]  are amazeballs!

AND IN THE COMPANY SPHERE:

The sheer amount of creative collaboration that KNOLL has done, as a company, as a working philosophy, as evidence that there can be a sustainable long-term relationship between corporate manufacturing and designers is daunting. The portfolio stands for itself. Florence Knoll did well.

MOROSO is another in a similar vein as knoll - if we had to make a sweeping statement we'd say that they are the current leaders in the field of creative collaborations. Granted, we don't like some of the crazy stuff but one can't fault them on believing in design, believing in designers.

Though BB ITALIA has a major claim on that sweeping statement regarding collaborative projects and forward thinking.

And HERMAN MILLER. These guys are on a roll. Them & their living office. Though the website confuses Antonia no end. She's been looking for the pics of one of their new fabric designs when applied to furniture. Large shapes etc. But no, sorry.

And VITRA? Amazing. As usual. They're at the top the the food chain, after all.
